The first of Christ’s three offices answers our ignorance. Fallen man is darkened in his understanding and cannot find God by his own searching, so Christ comes as a prophet, the great revealer of God. A prophet’s task is to speak God’s word to men, and Christ does this supremely, for He is not merely a messenger who brings a word from God but the Word of God Himself. “No one has ever seen God; God the only Son, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known” (John 1:18). All the prophets before Him pointed forward to Him; in Christ, the full and final revelation of God has come.

The catechism says He reveals the will of God by Word and Spirit. These two always work together. By His Word Christ teaches us the truth of God, first in His own earthly preaching, then through the apostles and prophets whose writings make up the Scriptures, which are His word to His church in every age. By His Spirit, He opens blind eyes to understand that Word, for the same truth that leaves the natural man unmoved becomes light and life when the Spirit applies it to the heart. Christ promised this very thing: “the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things” (John 14:26). The Word without the Spirit is heard but not received; the Spirit never works apart from the Word.

The limit and the aim of this prophetic teaching is the will of God for our salvation. Christ does not satisfy our idle curiosity about every mystery, but He tells us all we need to know that we might know God savingly and to walk with Him. He no longer calls His people servants kept in the dark, but friends, “for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you” (John 15:15). To sit under Christ’s prophetic office is to take His Word as our final authority and to plead for His Spirit to make it plain, refusing both the deadness that hears without understanding and the pride that seeks revelation apart from the Word He has given.

Last week, I visited The Museum of Pop Culture, which sits at the foot of the Space Needle in Seattle, Washington. It is a Frank Gehry structure of stainless steel panels and collapsing curves that the architect designed by purchasing electric guitars, cutting them to pieces, and working from the fragments. The building cost $240 million when it opened in 2000. Paul Allen, the Microsoft co-founder who commissioned it, died in 2018, worth $20.3 billion. He never married, had no children, and left the museum to the city where he was born. Inside, the collection has 80,000 artifacts: Hendrix’s guitars, Cobain’s hand-smashed Univox, Bowie’s handwritten lyrics to “Starman,” Prince’s motorcycle jacket from Purple Rain, horror film props, science fiction costumes, and a hall dedicated to the history of hip-hop, among many other things. I was there with my family for four hours. Since then, I’ve been contemplating what it means that this is what we now build.

Not a cathedral. Not a concert hall commissioned for a specific composer’s work. Not a library organized around a canon. A museum of pop culture, which is to say, a museum dedicated to preserving things that defined themselves by their refusal to last.

That is not a criticism of MoPOP, Allen, or the artifacts inside. I enjoyed the experience (aside from the incessant trigger warnings and reminders that progressive northwesterners think everything is offensive). Some of what hangs on those walls is nearly prophetic. Cobain identified a specific American sickness in 1991 with enough precision that the diagnosis still holds. Hip-hop gave voice to the experience that high culture had systematically excluded, and did it with formal inventiveness that serious critics eventually had to acknowledge. Pop culture at its best does what all serious art does: it identifies and articulates the sense of a culture before the culture has words for it. To dismiss it wholesale is to miss what it actually accomplished.

But the building is still made from the pieces of smashed instruments. And the question the building raises is not whether pop culture can be good. It can. The question is what it means that pop culture is now the only culture most people in the West share, and what that dominance has cost us.

There is a distinction, older than the argument about it, between three kinds of culture. High culture is the accumulated inheritance of a civilization’s best work, the things that survived not because they were popular but because successive generations judged them worth preserving. Folk culture is the living expression of a particular community: its songs, stories, and rituals, tied to place and belonging and transmitted person to person. Pop culture is neither. It is industrial, produced for mass consumption, optimized for immediate appeal, and designed to be replaced. It does not ask to endure. In fact, its business model depends on not enduring, because the next thing must be sold.

These three forms of culture were not always in competition. For most of Western history, they occupied different registers of the same shared world, and the relationship between them was one of the primary mechanisms by which a civilization transmitted itself across generations.

Consider the medieval parish. A laborer in thirteenth-century England could not read. He had no access to the universities at Oxford or Paris, no direct encounter with Aquinas or Augustine, no personal copy of anything. By every modern measure of cultural access, he was excluded from high culture. But the building where he worshipped every week had been designed by men who had absorbed the full theological and aesthetic inheritance of Christendom, and they had encoded it in stone, glass, and proportion. He could not have articulated what Aquinas argued about beauty, but the church building he entered every Sunday was a material expression of those arguments, and they did something to him without his knowing it.

His folk culture reinforced what the high culture embedded. The songs his community sang at planting and harvest, at weddings and funerals, carried the same cosmology to a different tune. They assumed a world with a moral order, with death as a real event and not merely a transition, with joy and grief as appropriate responses to specific things. The calendar his village kept, the feast days and fast days, organized time itself around a narrative that high culture had constructed and folk culture transmitted at the level of lived experience. He did not need to read to be formed by all of this. Formation was the ambient condition of his existence.

This is not a romanticization of the Middle Ages, which were brutal in ways the nostalgia tends to omit. The point is structural, not sentimental. High culture functioned as a set of standards that organized everything below it, including the institutions that shaped ordinary people who never directly encountered it. Folk culture functioned as the living transmission of those standards in forms that ordinary people could inhabit without formal education. The two were not identical and were often in tension, but they shared a common assumption: that some things are better than others, that the better things deserve more attention and more effort, and that the work of passing them forward is one of the primary obligations of each generation to the next.

Pop culture dissolves that structure. It does not replace high culture with something else that aspires to permanence. It replaces the aspiration itself. A culture saturated in pop stops asking whether a thing deserves to last and asks only whether it is compelling right now. The standard shifts from excellence to engagement, from judgment to preference, from “is this good” to “does this move me,” and then, one step further, to “does this move me this week,” and then to “what’s next?” The best of pop culture sometimes transcends its industrial origins and rewards repeated attention; the problem is not that nothing good can emerge from it, but that its dominant incentives and sheer volume steadily erode the habits that make such transcendence likely at scale.

This is what MoPOP, for all its genuine interest, inadvertently illustrates. The building holds artifacts from a culture that produced them with disposability in mind, and the very act of preserving them reveals the contradiction at the center of the enterprise. Allen wanted permanence for things that were never meant to be permanent. He wanted to honor a tradition that defined itself against tradition. The museum is a monument to the moment when a civilization wealthy enough to preserve anything found itself uncertain what, besides its own appetites, was worth preserving.

The loss is not primarily aesthetic, though it is that too. The deeper loss is the capacity for judgment that high culture requires and trains. To engage seriously with Dante or Bach or Monet is to submit yourself to standards you did not invent and cannot easily dismiss. The work makes demands. It asks you to develop the capacity to receive it, to bring patience and attention, and some degree of formed taste to the encounter. That formation takes time and requires the admission that your immediate reaction is not the final word on a thing’s value. You might not like it yet. You might need to grow into it.

Pop culture makes no such demand. It is engineered to be immediately accessible, which is one reason it dominates and one reason that dominance is corrosive. A person formed entirely by pop culture has never been asked to subordinate their immediate response to a longer judgment. They have never had the experience of being wrong about a piece of music or literature, returning to it, and finding that it was better than they first thought. They have never had to earn an aesthetic response. The result is not just shallower taste. It is a shallower personhood, a self that has been trained to treat its own momentary reactions as authoritative and to move on quickly when the reaction fades.

Aristotle argued in the Nicomachean Ethics that virtue is a habit formed by practice, that you become just by doing just acts and courageous by doing courageous acts, and that the appetites have to be trained toward the good rather than simply followed. The same logic applies to aesthetic and intellectual life. The capacity for sustained attention, for tolerating difficulty, for deferring judgment until understanding arrives, is not innate. It is cultivated, and high culture was one of the primary institutions through which the West cultivated it. Folk culture reinforced it by embedding people in communities with memories longer than their own lifetimes. Pop culture, by its structure, trains the opposite habits: immediacy, novelty, frictionless consumption, and the replacement of judgment with preference.

I am not making a nostalgic argument for returning to a world that never existed as cleanly as it sounds in summary. High culture was never democratically distributed. Its gatekeepers were often self-serving. Folk culture could be parochial and resistant to correction. The point is not that everything was better before the pop industry, but that something was present before it that is now largely absent: a shared set of standards, held and transmitted by institutions with enough truth to say that some things are better than others and that the better things deserve more of your attention than you may naturally want to give them.

The confidence to say that today, for many, is gone. Its disappearance is visible not only in what we build but in how we argue. The standard defense of any cultural artifact now is that it matters to someone, that it resonates, that it connects. These are descriptions of effect, not judgments of quality. They tell you what something does to a particular audience, not whether it is good. When effect replaces quality as the primary standard, all cultural production flattens to the same level, because everything affects someone. The result is not a more democratic culture. It is a culture without standards, which is a different and more serious problem.

I stood in the Guitar Gallery at MoPOP for a while, looking at instruments that had been played by people who understood their craft at a level I will never reach. The gallery traces the guitar from the acoustic parlors of the 1890s through the electric innovations of the 1940s through the stadium amplifications of the 1970s. It is genuinely instructive. You can see how mastery accumulated across generations, how each player built on and departed from what came before, how the instrument itself evolved in response to what serious musicians demanded of it. That is a high cultural process. It requires the transmission of standards, the formation of taste, and the willingness to judge one approach better than another.

But it’s fascinating to think that the museum that houses the gallery does not operate by those standards. It treats Hendrix’s guitar and a horror movie prop with the same curatorial seriousness because both are pop culture artifacts, and pop culture does not rank bad, good, better, or best. It just is. Everything is interesting; nothing is more important. This is the institution’s defining contradiction, and it is also the defining contradiction of the culture that produced it.

In the book of Ecclesiastes, Qohelet surveyed everything he had built and accumulated and called it vapor. The Hebrew word is hebel, breath, mist, the thing that dissipates as soon as it appears. He was not saying that his works were worthless. He was saying that they could not answer the question his life kept asking. The pursuit of excellence under the sun, divorced from the fear of God, eventually runs into the same wall that every human project does: it cannot tell you what is worth doing, why doing it well matters, or what the work is finally for.

A civilization that has lost confidence in its capacity to judge excellence has not found a better answer to that problem. It has stopped asking the question, which is not the same thing. The vapor still dissipates. The guitar still ends up in pieces. But what is it all for?

The asking of the question is not nothing. But it requires standards to ask against, a tradition long enough to provide a measure, and the willingness to submit your own immediate reactions to a judgment that outlasts them. That willingness is what pop culture, at scale, trains out of us. Recovering it is not a matter of going back. It is a matter of deciding that some things are worth the effort of going deeper, and that a self formed by that effort is more fully human than one that never made it.

The building at the foot of the Space Needle is worth visiting. Go and look at what we’ve saved and ask what we’ve lost in the meantime. Was it worth it?

These three offices answer the threefold need of fallen sinners. We are ignorant and need a prophet to teach us; we are guilty and need a priest to atone for us and intercede for us; we are helpless and enslaved and need a king to rule, defend, and deliver us. No one office alone would meet our whole misery, but in Christ all three are joined, so that He is a complete Redeemer for the whole of our ruin. Under the old covenant, prophets, priests, and kings were anointed to their work and foreshadowed Him; in Christ, the Anointed One, the offices they pictured find their fullness.

The catechism adds that Christ exercises these offices in His states of humiliation and exaltation. He did not lay them down when His earthly work was finished. As prophet, He taught on earth and now teaches His church by His Word and Spirit. As priest, He offered Himself once for sin on the cross and now lives to intercede for His people at the Father’s right hand. As king, He was mocked with a crown of thorns in His humiliation and now reigns over all things in His exaltation, “a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek” (Hebrews 5:6). The same Christ who was humbled to death is the Christ now exalted, and He carries out all three offices in both states for the salvation of those given to Him.

This office of mediator belongs to Christ alone and can be shared with no other. He needs no fellow prophets to complete His revelation, no other priests to add to His sacrifice, no rival kings to share His throne. To look to any other for what these offices supply, whether a human priesthood to mediate forgiveness or any earthly authority to claim the conscience that belongs to Christ, is to wrong the sufficiency of our Redeemer. The Christ who saves us is prophet, priest, and king, and in Him every need of His people is fully met.

Christ did not merely appear to be human, nor did He take a body while lacking a human mind and will. He assumed a complete human nature, body and soul together, like ours in every respect except sin. His was a real body that grew, hungered, wearied, and bled, and a real human soul that thought, willed, and felt. We see the body in His weariness and death, and we see the soul in His words, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death” (Matthew 26:38). Whatever belongs to true humanity, apart from sin, belonged to Him.

The catechism then names the manner of His coming, conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit in the womb of the Virgin Mary and born of her. He entered our race by the miraculous work of the Holy Spirit, so that Mary was truly His mother and yet He had no human father. The angel’s word to her was, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy” (Luke 1:35). By this virgin conception the eternal Son took our nature and was truly born, sharing in flesh and blood with those He came to save (Hebrews 2:14).

He was born yet without sin. Conceived by the Holy Spirit, His human nature was free from the corruption that infects every other child of Adam. He inherited no guilt, no original sin, no inward bent toward evil. This sinlessness is no minor detail but the ground of our salvation. A Redeemer who shared our guilt could not bear ours; only one who was “holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners” (Hebrews 7:26), “in every respect tempted as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15), could stand in our place. The spotless humanity of Christ is the reason He can be both our sympathizing high priest and our acceptable sacrifice.

As the second person of the Trinity, He is “God over all, blessed forever” (Romans 9:5), of one substance with the Father. Yet “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14), taking to Himself a true human nature without ceasing to be God.

The heart of this answer is the union of the two natures. Christ was and continues to be God and man, in two distinct natures and one person, forever. Both natures remain whole and distinct: the deity did not shrink into humanity, nor was the humanity swallowed up into deity. “In him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily” (Colossians 2:9). At the same time, the two natures are not divided into two persons; they are united in the one person of the Son, so that the same Christ is fully God and fully man. This is the mystery the church confessed at Chalcedon (451 AD), and the Confession states with care, two whole, perfect, and distinct natures inseparably joined together in one person, without conversion, composition, or confusion. He must be God to bear the infinite weight of His people’s sin and to give His work infinite worth; He must be man to stand in our place, obey in our nature, and die our death. Only one who is both God and man can be the “one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5).

The whole comfort of the gospel rests on the person of Christ. Because He is God, His blood is of infinite value, and His power to save cannot fail; because He is man, He is a sympathetic high priest who was tempted as we are and who represents us truly before God. To know this Christ, the God-man, is to have a Redeemer fully sufficient for the deepest need, and the believer rests his whole soul on the One who is and forever will be God and man in one person.

A. God, out of His good pleasure, from all eternity, having chosen a people to everlasting life, entered into a covenant of grace to deliver them out of the state of sin and misery, and to bring them into a state of salvation by a Redeemer.

Commentary

After the sobering account of our ruin, the catechism turns to grace. God did not leave all mankind to perish. Of His own free mercy, out of His good pleasure, from all eternity, He chose to save a people. The deliverance begins in eternity, not in anything good foreseen in us but in God’s sovereign and gracious will. He “chose us in him before the foundation of the world” (Ephesians 1:4), and “chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth” (2 Thessalonians 2:13). Salvation is God’s work from first to last, and its fountain is His eternal good pleasure.

This eternal choice took the form of a covenant of grace. Having brought himself under the curse of the law, man could never deliver himself, so God freely bound Himself by covenant to rescue His chosen people. In this covenant, He offers life and salvation by Jesus Christ, requiring faith and giving His Holy Spirit to make sinners willing and able to believe. Where the covenant of works said, “Do this and live,” the covenant of grace says, “Believe and be saved,” resting the whole weight of our deliverance on Christ rather than on ourselves. God promises, “I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people” (Jeremiah 31:33).

Notice that this deliverance comes by a Redeemer. God did not simply overlook sin or set aside His justice. He provided a Redeemer to bear what justice demanded and to win the salvation His people could never earn, so that “grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 5:21). The questions that follow will set this Redeemer before us, who He is and what He has done. For now, it is enough to wonder that God, against whom we had sinned, should be the very one to plan and provide our rescue. The doctrine of free and sovereign grace, far from making us careless, is the firmest ground of a sinner’s hope.

7.1: The distance between God and the creature is so great, that although reasonable creatures do owe obedience to Him as their creator, yet they could never have attained the reward of life but by some voluntary condescension on God’s part, which He hath been pleased to express by way of covenant.

Q. What is the misery of that state into which man fell?

A. All mankind, by their fall, lost communion with God, are under His wrath and curse and are made liable to all the miseries of this life, to death itself, and the pains of hell forever.

Commentary

The first and deepest misery we experience in our fallen state is that we have lost communion with God. Man was made for fellowship with his Maker, and in the fall that fellowship was broken. Adam, who had walked with God, now hid himself among the trees and was driven from the garden (Genesis 3:8, 24). To be cut off from God, the fountain of all life and joy, is the root of every other misery, for the soul made for Him cannot be at rest apart from Him (Augustine of Hippo).

Beyond this loss, the catechism says we are under His wrath and curse. Our condition is not merely the absence of God’s favor but the presence of His settled opposition to sin. We are “by nature children of wrath” (Ephesians 2:3), justly exposed to the penalty His law pronounces: “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law” (Galatians 3:10). From this flow all the miseries of this life, the sorrows, sicknesses, disappointments, and griefs that touch every person, and finally death itself, the wages of sin (Romans 6:23). And beyond death lies the most fearful misery of all, the pains of hell forever, the eternal punishment of those who die unreconciled to God. Our Lord spoke plainly that “These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life” (Matthew 25:46).

Nothing less than this drives a sinner to seek deliverance. We do men no kindness when we hide from them the true extent of their danger. Yet the catechism sets out our misery so fully precisely because the deliverance it goes on to describe is so great. The next question turns from the depth of our ruin to the riches of God’s grace, and the wonder of that grace can only be measured against the wrath and curse from which it saves. The one who has trembled at the misery of his fallen state is ready to hear the good news of a Redeemer.

Q. What makes the state to which humanity fell so sinful?

A. The state of sinfulness is rooted in the guilt of Adam’s first sin, the absence of original righteousness, and the corruption of his whole nature, known as original sin, together with all the specific wrongdoings that stem from this corrupted nature.

Commentary

The catechism now opens up the sinful side of our fallen state, naming three things that together make up what is called original sin. The first is the guilt of Adam’s first sin. As our covenant head, Adam’s transgression is reckoned to us, so that we come into the world already condemned, not yet for sins of our own doing but for the sin of the one who represented us. The second is the absence of original righteousness, the loss of that true knowledge, righteousness, and holiness in which man was first created. Where Adam once stood upright before God, his children are born stripped of that uprightness, lacking the very righteousness the law requires.

The third is the corruption of his whole nature. The fall did not merely wound man in one part while leaving the rest sound; it defiled the whole, mind, will, affections, and body alike. This is total depravity, meaning not that every person is as wicked as he could possibly be, but that no part of him is left untouched by sin. “Out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander” (Matthew 15:19). By nature we are “dead in the trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1), unable to please God or to turn to Him in our own strength. From this corrupted root grow all the specific wrongdoings of our lives, the actual sins we commit daily, which are not the cause of our sinful nature but its bitter produce.

This is a humbling doctrine, and it is meant to be. It strips away every ground of boasting and every hope of self-reformation, for a corrupt tree cannot bear good fruit, and a dead man cannot raise himself. Yet the very thoroughness of our ruin makes the grace of God shine all the brighter. The salvation Christ brings is not a slight repair to a basically sound nature but a new birth, a new heart, and a righteousness given from outside ourselves. The deeper we feel the corruption of original sin, the more we will treasure the Savior who alone can cleanse it.

Having shown that all mankind fell in Adam, the catechism now describes the condition into which we fell, a state of sin and misery. It is a state, not merely a series of acts. We do not first exist in a neutral condition and then commit sins that spoil it; we are born already in this state, sinful and miserable from the womb. “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me” (Psalm 51:5). Every child of Adam enters the world in this fallen condition, and apart from the grace of God in Christ, no one escapes it.

The state has two parts. The first is sin: the guilt of Adam’s transgression reckoned to us, the loss of original righteousness, and the corruption of our whole nature, out of which flow all our actual transgressions. The second is misery: the whole weight of consequences that sin brings down upon us, the loss of fellowship with God, His wrath and curse, and all the sorrows of this life and the next. Sin is the root, and misery is the fruit. Because we have broken God’s law in Adam, we lie under all the penalties that law attaches to sin. “All our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment” (Isaiah 64:6), and one act of trespass led to condemnation for all (Romans 5:18).

Understanding our condition rightly matters for everything that follows. A man who thinks himself basically well will see no need of a physician; only the one who knows he is sick will seek a cure. The doctrine of sin and misery is not given to crush us into hopelessness but to drive us out of ourselves and toward the only remedy.

The catechism now states one of the most important truths in all of Scripture, that Adam acted for more than himself. The covenant being made with Adam extended to himself and his future generations. When God entered into the covenant of works with Adam, He dealt with him not as a private person but as the head and representative of the whole human race. Adam stood in our place. Had he obeyed, the life he secured would have belonged to all whom he represented; because he sinned, the guilt and ruin of that sin fall upon all who descend from him by ordinary generation. This is called federal headship, and without it neither the fall nor the work of Christ can be understood.

So the catechism concludes that all mankind has sinned in Adam and fell with him in his first transgression. This is not merely that we imitate Adam’s sin, though we do, nor only that we inherit a corrupt nature from him, though we do that as well. Scripture teaches that we actually sinned in him, our representative, so that his guilt is reckoned as ours. As Paul writes, “death spread to all men because all sinned” (Romans 5:12), and again, “by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners” (Romans 5:19). The parallel he draws is exact: “as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive” (1 Corinthians 15:22). The same principle of representation that condemns us in Adam saves us in Christ.

Some recoil at this, thinking it unjust to be held accountable for another man’s sin. Yet the very principle that troubles us in Adam is the principle that rescues us in Christ. If we will not be represented by Adam, neither can we be represented by Christ, and we would be left to stand or fall on our own obedience, which has already failed. Far better to receive the testimony of Scripture, to confess our guilt in Adam honestly, and to flee to the last Adam, whose one act of righteousness brings justification and life to all who are united to Him by faith.

The catechism points to the particular act in which the fall took place: their eating the forbidden fruit. God had set before Adam and Eve a single, clear prohibition, the one tree from which they were not to eat, and in taking and eating they broke it. The act looks small, a piece of fruit, but the smallness of the thing forbidden only magnifies the greatness of the rebellion. The issue was never the fruit itself; it was whether the creature would submit to the word of his Creator. In reaching for what God had forbidden, our first parents declared that they would be their own judges of good and evil, and the whole law was broken in that one act.

Beneath the outward eating lay a heart already turned from God. They believed the serpent’s lie above God’s truth, doubted His goodness, coveted what was not theirs, and grasped at a forbidden wisdom. What began as unbelief ended in open disobedience. When God came to them, their guilt showed itself further in the shifting of blame: “The man said, ‘The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.’ ... The woman said, ‘The serpent deceived me, and I ate’” (Genesis 3:12–13). Adam blamed his wife and, by implication, God who gave her; Eve blamed the serpent. Neither would own the sin as his own, and in this we see the bitter fruit of the fall already at work in the human heart.

The reason this single act carries such weight becomes plain in the questions that follow. Adam did not sin as a private individual but as the appointed head of the human race, so that his one act of disobedience brought guilt and corruption upon all his posterity. The same pattern of sin he displayed in the garden, unbelief, pride, and the refusal to own our guilt, runs through every one of his children. We are quick to excuse ourselves, to blame our circumstances, and to charge God foolishly, and in this we prove ourselves true sons of Adam who need a second and better Adam to undo what the first one did.

Q. What is sin?

A. Sin is any lack of conformity to, or transgression of, the law of God.

Commentary

This definition is compact, but it reaches every sin that ever was or will be committed. Sin is measured against one standard, the law of God, the perfect expression of His holy character. Whatever agrees with that law is righteous; whatever departs from it in any degree is sin. Sin is not defined by human opinion, cultural consensus, or personal feeling, and it is not finally an offense against our neighbor or ourselves but against God, whose law it breaks. Until we see sin as God sees it, measured by His law and aimed against His majesty, we will never grasp its seriousness or our need of a Savior.

The catechism names two ways the law is broken. The first is any lack of conformity to it. This covers the good we fail to do, the love we withhold, the duties we leave undone, and the corruption of nature in which we are born. A man may break no visible commandment and still fall short, for the law requires not only outward acts but inward purity, and the absence of righteousness is itself sinful. The second is any transgression of the law, the positive doing of what God forbids. Here are the sins of commission, the open acts of rebellion in thought, word, and deed. As John writes, “sin is lawlessness” (1 John 3:4). Both the failure to keep the law and the breaking of it leave a man guilty before God.

Seeing sin this clearly humbles every pretension of human goodness. None of us is righteous by the measure of God’s law, whether in what we have done or in what we have left undone. This is no cause for despair but the necessary first step toward grace, for the same God whose law exposes our sin has provided a Redeemer who kept that law perfectly and bore its penalty in the place of His people. The man who feels the weight of his sin is the man prepared to flee to Christ, in whom alone there is forgiveness and a righteousness not his own.

The catechism now records the tragic turn in human history. Our first parents did not continue in the holy and happy state in which they were created; being left to the freedom of their own will, they fell. Adam and Eve were made upright, with no corruption in their nature and every advantage to persevere, yet their righteousness, though real, was mutable, capable of change. God left them to the liberty of their own will, neither forcing them to stand nor compelling them to fall, and in that freedom they chose to rebel. “God made man upright, but they have sought out many schemes” (Ecclesiastes 7:29). The fall was thus no fault in their Maker and no necessity in their nature, but the free and inexcusable act of the creature.

Their fall consisted in sinning against God. Tempted by the serpent, they distrusted God’s word, coveted what He had forbidden, and presumed to seize the place of God in deciding good and evil for themselves. “She took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate” (Genesis 3:6). The outward act was the eating of forbidden fruit, but the inward sin lay deeper: unbelief, pride, and rebellion against the goodness and authority of God. In that single transgression, the whole law was broken, and the covenant of works was shattered.

The consequences of this fall were beyond all reckoning, for Adam fell not as a private man but as the covenant head of the human race. By his sin, he plunged himself and all his posterity into a state of sin and misery, losing the original righteousness in which he was made and corrupting the nature he would pass on to every child of man. This is the somber background against which the gospel must be understood. We are not basically good people in need of a little improvement, but fallen creatures, ruined in Adam and unable to recover ourselves. Yet the same Scripture that tells us how deeply we fell also points us to the only remedy: the grace of God in Jesus Christ, the second Adam, who came to undo what the first Adam did and to raise His people into a state of salvation that can never be lost.

Q. What special act of providence did God exercise towards man when he was created?

A. When God created man, He entered into a covenant of works with him with the condition of perfect obedience, forbidding him to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil under the threat of death.

Commentary

Beyond preserving and governing man in general, God exercised toward Adam a special act of providence: He entered into a covenant of works with him. A covenant is a solemn arrangement in which God binds Himself to His creature by promise and stipulation. In this first covenant, God dealt with Adam not merely as a creature but as a covenant head, setting before him the prospect of confirmed life upon the condition of his obedience. This was an act of great condescension, for God owed Adam nothing; yet He was pleased to enter into covenant, that man might have a sure and gracious way to everlasting blessedness held out before him.

The covenant had a clear condition of perfect obedience. The whole law of God, written upon Adam’s heart, required of him an obedience that was perfect, personal, and perpetual. As a particular test of that obedience, God forbade him to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, attaching to it a fearful sanction: the threat of death. “Of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” (Genesis 2:17). The command was simple, but the issue was momentous: life for obedience, death for transgression. The principle of this covenant is summed up in the words the apostle later cites, “The one who does them shall live by them” (Galatians 3:12).

The covenant of works is of the greatest importance for understanding the whole of Scripture, for Adam stood in it not for himself alone but as the representative of all his posterity. His obedience would have secured life for all whom he represented; his disobedience brought ruin upon all. And precisely here the gospel begins to shine. Where the first Adam failed, the last Adam, Jesus Christ, came to render the perfect obedience the covenant required and to bear the death its breach deserved. Thus, the covenant of works, though broken by us, prepares us to receive the covenant of grace, in which a better Representative obeys in our place and earns the life we never could.

A. God’s most holy, wise, and powerful works of providence are for preserving and governing all His creatures and all their actions.

Commentary

Having considered creation, the catechism turns to providence, the ongoing work by which God upholds and directs all that He has made. God’s works of providence are for preserving and governing all His creatures and all their actions. Providence has two parts. By preservation, God keeps every creature in being, sustaining the existence He first gave, so that nothing continues for a moment by its own power. By government, God directs all things to the ends He has appointed, ruling over every creature and every event so that all things serve His purpose. “In him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:17), and He “upholds the universe by the word of his power” (Hebrews 1:3).

The catechism describes these works as most holy, wise, and powerful, and their reach as extending to all His creatures and all their actions. His providence is powerful, for it governs the vast and the minute alike, from the courses of the stars to the falling of a single sparrow and the numbering of the hairs of our head (Matthew 10:29–30). It is wise, for it orders all things to good and fitting ends, even when its ways are hidden from us. And it is holy, for in governing even the sinful actions of His creatures, God remains untouched by their sin; He directs, limits, and overrules evil for good while never Himself being the author of it. Nothing is too great to exceed His control, and nothing too small to escape His care.

No doctrine yields more daily comfort to the believer than this. Because God governs all His creatures and all their actions, the Christian knows that nothing enters his life apart from his Father’s wise and holy will. Sickness and health, plenty and want, the kindness of friends and the malice of enemies are all held within the hand of God and bent to serve His good purposes. This truth does not excuse our idleness, for God ordinarily works through means, and we are called to use them faithfully. But it does banish our anxiety, teaching us to cast our care upon the One who upholds the universe and yet stoops to number the hairs of our head.

Commentary

The crown of God’s creative work was the making of man. The catechism confesses that God created mankind male and female, in His own image. Among all the creatures, man alone was made in the divine image, set apart from the beasts by a reasonable and immortal soul and made for fellowship with his Maker. This image was given to humanity as male and female, two distinct and complementary expressions of one humanity, both equally bearing God’s image and together commissioned in His service. The distinction of the sexes is therefore not a human convention or an accident of biology but a part of God’s original design, declared by Him to be very good.

The catechism specifies the content of that image as it was first given: knowledge, righteousness, and holiness. Adam was created with a mind that truly knew God, a will rightly ordered to obey Him, and a nature wholly pure and undefiled. This is called original righteousness, not merely innocence, but positive conformity to God in the whole soul. We know this is the substance of the image because Scripture describes the renewal of fallen man in Christ in precisely these terms: the new self is “created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:24) and “renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator” (Colossians 3:10). What was lost in Adam is restored, and more than restored, in the last Adam, the Lord Jesus Christ.

To this God added dominion over the creatures. Man was appointed as God’s vice-regent over the earth, to rule the lower creation under God and for God, cultivating and keeping the world as a faithful steward. This dignity is immense, but it is a derived and accountable dignity; man rules as a servant, not a sovereign. The doctrine of man’s creation in the image of God thus establishes both the high worth of every human being (male and female, of every age and condition) and the solemn calling under which we live. We were made to know God, to reflect His righteousness and holiness, and to govern His world for His glory; and though sin has marred this image, it has not erased it, and in Christ it is being remade.

The catechism now expounds the first of God’s great works. The work of creation is God’s making all things out of nothing. This is the doctrine of creation ex nihilo. God did not fashion the world from pre-existing material, as a craftsman shapes wood or stone, for before creation nothing existed but God Himself. He made all things by the Word of His power, simply speaking the universe into being. As the writer to the Hebrews testifies, “By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible” (Hebrews 11:3). This sets the Creator infinitely apart from the creature and overthrows every notion that matter is eternal or that the world arose by chance.

Scripture further tells us that God accomplished this work in the space of six days, and all very good. He who could have created everything in a single instant chose instead to work in an orderly succession of days, establishing a pattern of labor and rest woven into the very fabric of the world (Exodus 20:11). And at each stage He pronounced His work good, until, surveying the whole, “God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good” (Genesis 1:31). The creation, as it came from the hand of God, was free from every flaw, perfectly suited to display His wisdom, power, and goodness, and wholly fit for the purposes for which He made it.

Because God made all things, the entire creation belongs to Him and bears witness to His glory; there is no neutral ground and no rival creator. Because He made all things good, the material world is not evil, as various ancient and modern errors have supposed, but a good gift to be received with thanksgiving and stewarded for His honor. And because He made all things by the Word of His power, the Christian need never fear that the world is governed by blind forces or hostile fate. The God who spoke the universe into being holds it still, and the same Word that created will, in Christ, make all things new.

Q. How does God carry out His decrees?

A. God carries out His decrees in the works of creation and providence.

Commentary

Having confessed that God has foreordained whatever comes to pass, the catechism now asks how that eternal purpose is brought to pass in time. God executes His decrees in the works of creation and providence. The decree is the plan; creation and providence are its accomplishment. What God purposed in eternity He performs in history, so that all His works in time are the unfolding of His single, wise, and holy counsel. There is, therefore, a perfect harmony between God’s eternal purpose and everything that actually happens. The world is not adrift, but is being carried, moment by moment, toward the ends God appointed before time began.

These two works, creation and providence, together comprise all that God does outside of Himself. By creation, God brought the entire universe into existence out of nothing, calling into being all things visible and invisible. By providence, He preserves and governs all that He has made, upholding every creature in being and directing every action to its appointed end. “In him we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28). Were He to withdraw His sustaining hand for a single instant, the whole creation would collapse into nothing. Thus, the same power that first made the world continually keeps it, and the same wisdom that planned all things continually governs them.

This truth fills the believer’s life with reverence and gratitude. Every sunrise, every harvest, every breath is the immediate work of God carrying out His good purposes. “Look at the birds of the air...your heavenly Father feeds them” (Matthew 6:26), and the God who clothes the lilies and numbers the sparrows is the same God who has ordered the believer’s whole life. To live well in such a world is to receive all things as from His hand, to give thanks in every circumstance, and to trust that the God who made all things is even now governing them for His glory and His people’s good.
